Having covered their loss in Europa League to Panathinaikos I was again covering AIK. This time they were back in Solna, a suburb of Stockholm, and playing at their own ground Friends Arena.
On paper this should have been an easy match for AIK. Helsingborg has been awful this season and risks relegation. Unfortunately they made it harder on themselves. An own goal late in the first half gave the visiting side the lead. A goal from Eero Markkanen at the 62nd brought it level again. It then took a penalty on the 82nd, converted by Daniel Sundgren, to give the home side the win.
With this victory AIK maintains their position in 3rd place and Helsingborg remains way down near the bottom of the table in 14th place. AIK’s next game is away to Örebro, but after that we get another derby when they welcome Hammarby to Friends Arena. A match that should be really exciting, AIK completely dominated the previous derby match against Hammarby. Motivation for them should be high to get a big win and cement their place as derby kings this season.
