Tuesday night offered the second Swedish Cup derby match of the year. This time Hammarby, who already eliminated Djurgården travelled to Friends Arena to face off with AIK. The game was given an awkward kick off time of 18:30 in order to try and avoid conflicting with the evenings UEFA Champions League matches. While good in theory, it completely failed in practice. The game was first delayed due to smoke from all the flares. The match would then go on into overtime and eventually end with a penalty shootout.
I started the match on Hammarby’s short side with AIK attacking towards me. Durring the first half it really felt to me like AIK was having the best of the game. Controlling the field and creating more chances, however Hammarby went on and scored the opener late in the first half. After Hammarby scored I decided I would stay put and have them attacking towards me in the second half. My feelings being that perhaps with a goal advantage it could turn the tide in the second half.
My instinct didn’t really pay off as AIK continued to be the more dangerous of the two and was able to equalize the game. So two goals, both on my far end. It happens. After the equalizing goal neither side was able to score another and the match continued on and was eventually decided on penalties. Durring the penalty shootout it looked like AIK was going to come out ahead, but Hammarby turned it and came out victorious.
Thanks for stopping by!
