I was on hand working for UEFA via Getty Images to photograph the semi-final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League between Tyresö FF and the Birmingham City Ladies.
Tyresö is a suburb to Stockholm and their team is currently a big topic of discussion in the local news. It’s a side that has been built with a ton of stars, including Brazil’s Marta to name just one.
The only problem is the club is currently on the verge of collapse. No money to pay the bills and no money to pay their star players. It seems they can’t even register to play in the top division next season. A fire sale at the end of the season is an inevitability at this point.
However despite this turbulent climate there was a final within reach. The possibility of lifting one last trophy before the group inevitably disbands. And with that in mind Tyresö swept away Birmingham City with 3 goals. Two goals from Christen Press, currently the top scorer in the UEFA Women’s Champions League tournament, and one goal from Brazilian star Marta.
Amazingly the next stop for Tyresö is going to Lisbon, Portugal to play in the final. Hopefully the team doesn’t have to pay for their own flight.
Maybe yours truly can make the trip and cover the final. We’ll see what happens.
